About Us
SW Cowboy Church began on January 18th, 2004, by Derek & Cecy Kirby with a desire to reach people that were not involved in church anywhere, people who were appreciative of the “country side of life,” people who may have dirt on their boots or just been feeding cattle, and want a church reminding them of their ‘country roots.’ Simple people that just want the simple truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “We were wanting a less formal and less traditional place to go to church. A “Come As You Are” attitude. One that would reach out to people that like horses, cattle, and farming. We also wanted to show a church where people feel that they don’t have to be judged by religious people because they haven’t ‘fit a mold’ according to human standards. My wife and I prefer SW Cowboy Church over the ‘traditional church’ because we feel more focused simply upon a ‘relationship with Christ.’ ‘Programs’ or ‘how cool the air conditioner is in the summer” aren’t the focus of people’s needs.” SW Cowboy Church doesn’t believe in wearing suits or ties. Boots, cowboy hats, Wranglers, Rockies, or just working man’s clothes are the norm here. People of SW Cowboy Church may come from intact families, divorced, single parent families, one parent working and the other attending, one gone hunting or fishing then coming for the service and then going back, or just young couples who want to hear the Word of God given in a simple way. Some of the events have been Levels I, II, & III Roping Clinics that featured Jack & Niki Callahan & Triple Cross Ministries helping with the training, the growing annual “Fall Ball Dance” every 3rd Saturday of October each year, concert series, and potluck dinners which SW Cowboy Church calls ‘Get-Togethers after Church,’ and just different events that are ‘cowboy’ or “country” where “good people that don’t mind getting their tires muddy when there is rain” just meet to talk about Jesus.
“We are a ‘growing church’ and we've had our 1st Anniversary Celebration with the CALVARY COWBOYS helping us out, and our 2nd Anniversary Celebration with BRANDED singing in concert, and our 3rd Anniversary with Dale Greear singing in concert along with Delayna Wilkerson, and our 4th Anniversary with Rope & Candice Myers speaking and singing, which marks four years of good growth for the people of SW Cowboy Church.” We welcome people with guitars and banjos that may have a tune for Jesus that they may want to sing or share a Cowboy poem that reaches to the people about God. We've had "saddle sermons," "bridle sermons," "skillet sermons" (dealing with Bible Doctrine of this church and 'How Big is Your God?'), 5 "Horse Sermons" to help get the Word of God through people of the church in "shared ministry" illustrating to us with their horse. Did you know that horses can speak to us about God? Then recently we had one of our men help us with 7 "Farrier Sermons" to help us illustrate "How God Shapes Us as a Church" like a hoseshoe on a horse! There is nothing about the speaker that is ‘eloquent.’ “Jesus just sat down and taught. The people of God are the ones who are involved with the study,” and Derek says he stumbles his words good and just ‘preach-teaches’ on a stool or just discusses with people, instead of preaching at a podium and making speeches. “We all share in God’s Word.” Children sit with their mothers or fathers, families are together, friends come together. Services are every Sunday at 10 am at the Jackson County Expo Center. It’s just real! Thanks to God for this opportunity of bringing country folk together in the name of Jesus Christ!
